SAT Superscoring: How It Works

Combine the best section results—but verify each college's current policy before deciding what to send

Short answer

A superscore adds your highest Reading and Writing section score to your highest Math section score across eligible test dates. The sections can come from different dates. Colleges control whether and how they superscore, so always confirm the current policy on each institution's own admissions site.

In this example, neither date total is 1470. The superscore uses the strongest eligible section from each date.

Superscore and Score Choice are different

Superscoring is a college's method for evaluating scores across dates. Score Choice is College Board's sending feature, which lets students choose reports by test date in many circumstances.

Score Choice sends the complete score report for a selected SAT date, not one isolated section.
A college may need reports from multiple dates to calculate the superscore.
Some colleges or scholarship programs require all scores, and free registration score sends have separate limitations.

A retake can focus on the lower section—but not ignore the other

If a target college superscores, improving the lower best section may raise the evaluated total even if the other section stays flat. Still, you take and send complete test-date results under the applicable policy.

Compare the lower section with the target range and any scholarship requirements.
Maintain the stronger section so test-day execution does not collapse.
Weigh the possible benefit against time needed for coursework, applications, rest, and activities.

Verify the policy before registering or sending

Do not rely on an old third-party list. Check each college's current testing page for superscoring, required administrations, deadlines, self-reporting rules, and whether official reports are needed at application time.

Record the policy URL and the date you checked it.
Confirm rules separately for scholarships or special programs.
Recheck before sending because institutions control and can change their policies.
