What SAT superscoring means

Superscoring means evaluating your strongest section results across different test dates. If one sitting has your best Reading & Writing score and another has your best Math score, the two can be combined into a higher total for colleges that use superscores.

Worked example

A student scores 690 R&W and 740 Math in March (1430), then 720 R&W and 710 Math in June (also 1430). The superscore is 1460: 720 R&W from June plus 740 Math from March.

Before you send scores

  • Check each college’s current testing policy on its official admissions site.
  • Confirm whether the college superscores and which score reports it requires.
  • Use the result for retake planning: focus on the section with the larger realistic upside.
